Homebrew Allows For DVD Playback

:

I always thought the outcry for DVD playback for the Nintendo Wii was a bit overhyped. With just about any electrical device playing DVDs these days, I was easily able to look past Nintendo leaving this feature out. Now, for those who still really really want DVD playback, there’s a homebrew that will allow DVDs to play on your Nintendo Wii. The program is called MPlayer, and can be found here.

**Update** - There are a couple of helpful tips when using Homebrew. First, you should know that there is always a potential for bricking your system. Although the current homebrew hasn’t cause bricking at the time of this post, that’s not to say that it could happen. Bricking pretty much means your system is useless. As Wii Guide mentioned in a comment below, this could also potentially lower the life span of your Wii. So just remember these two points before you go through with the DVD Playback, or any Homebrew in general.

Some people might just want their small slim Wii and nothing else beside their TV. However, I’ve read that the drive used in Wii are of low quality not made for long hour playbacks and this homebrew could decrese it’s lifetime significally.

I have read something about nintendo “bricking” your Wii, if it finds any non-nintendo-origin stuff on it and making it “useless.” I wonder if this applies to movies or just to Wii games?
